The Daria Annotation

Dye! Dye! My Darling
The title is a parody of Die! Die! My Darling, a 1965 camp thriller movie of the Baby Jane variety. It's about a batty, psychotic old witch who imprisons her daughter-in-law and tries giving her religion after her son suicides. Or possibly a Danzig/Misfits song (also performed by Metallica):
The Lady or the Tiger is an open-ended short story by Frank R. Stockton. When Jane says to Daria "Methinks thou doest protesteth too much", she's referring to Hamlet. The actual line is "The lady protests too much, methinks." It's from Act 3, scene 2, where Hamlet has arranged for a play to be presented that echoes his suspicions about Claudius and Queen Gertrude. The Queen in the play spends about thirty lines explaining how she could never remarry. This line is Queen Gertruede's reply when Hamlet asks her how she likes the play. Daria's comment about Samson is a biblical reference. Jane is really chipper after what happened to her the day before. Would Andrea really just stand there and gawk at Daria and Jane, after "Mart of Darkness"? I had hoped for some sort of understanding between the three that could be developed next season. Eczema is a skin condition; dry, flaky rash basically. "An Affair to Remember" is a movie about a playboy and a club singer who have an affair on a cruise despite both being engaged to other people. |
