The Daria Annotation File:
Dye! Dye! My Darling

The title is a parody of Die! Die! My Darling, a 1965 camp thriller movie of the Baby Jane variety. It's about a batty, psychotic old witch who imprisons her daughter-in-law and tries giving her religion after her son suicides.

Or possibly a Danzig/Misfits song (also performed by Metallica):

Die, Die, Die my darling
Don't utter a single word
Die, Die, Die my darling
Just shut your pretty eyes
I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing you in hell

chorus:
Don't cry to me oh baby
Your future's in an oblong box, yeah
Don't cry to me oh baby
Should have seen it a-coming on
Don't cry to me oh baby
I don't know it was in your power
Don't cry to me oh baby
Dead-end girl for a dead-end guy
Don't cry to me oh baby
Now your life drains on the floor
Don't cry to me oh baby

Die, die, die my darling
Don't utter a single word
Die, die, die my darling
Just shut your pretty mouth
I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing you in hell

chorus:
Die, die, die my darling
Just shut your pretty mouth
I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing you... in Hell

The Lady or the Tiger is an open-ended short story by Frank R. Stockton.

When Jane says to Daria "Methinks thou doest protesteth too much", she's referring to Hamlet. The actual line is "The lady protests too much, methinks." It's from Act 3, scene 2, where Hamlet has arranged for a play to be presented that echoes his suspicions about Claudius and Queen Gertrude. The Queen in the play spends about thirty lines explaining how she could never remarry. This line is Queen Gertruede's reply when Hamlet asks her how she likes the play.

Daria's comment about Samson is a biblical reference.
"Samson is a great Hebrew judge except that he loves Philistine women. Eventually, he ends up with a Philistine temple prostitute named Delilah. He is incredibly big, unbelievably strong, and really stupid. Four times, Delilah asked him the secret of his strength and betrayed him. Eventually he gives in to her and reveals the secret of his strength: his long hair which is never to be cut. She betrays him again. The Philistines cut his hair as he sleeps and seize him, easily overpowering the weakened man. He ends up replacing an ox on a grinding mill, blind and feeble. But during his captivity, his hair begins to grow back. He is taken to the Temple of Dagon, where with his renewed strength, he pushes the pillars out and kills everyone, including himself."

Jane is really chipper after what happened to her the day before.

Would Andrea really just stand there and gawk at Daria and Jane, after "Mart of Darkness"? I had hoped for some sort of understanding between the three that could be developed next season.

Eczema is a skin condition; dry, flaky rash basically.

"An Affair to Remember" is a movie about a playboy and a club singer who have an affair on a cruise despite both being engaged to other people.
